How to get started
Step 1: Come to a public event
No experience needed. We have these opportunities:
- Monthly stargazing events
- Intro to Astronomy Nights (reservations required, great for beginners)
- Astronomy lectures and talks
You’ll look through real telescopes, ask questions, and meet people who love helping beginners.
Step 2: Join CCAS when you’re ready
Membership gives you access to:
- Member observing nights
- Telescope and equipment help
- Telescope loans
- Workshops and interest groups
- Experienced amateur and professional astronomers
Step 3: Learn by doing
Once you’re ready to go deeper, you can learn telescope skills, binocular astronomy, astrophotography, solar observing, and more alongside other members.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. We’re here to help you dive in deeper!
Do I need my own telescope?
No. Many people start with binoculars, borrowed telescopes, or no equipment at all. Come observe with us before buying anything! We can help you figure out what equipment, if any, makes the most sense for you.
Who Joins CCAS?
Families, students, retirees, engineers, artists, first-time observers, experienced astronomers, and everyone in between. Some members simply enjoy looking through a telescope. Others pursue astrophotography or scientific research. You do not need experience to belong here.
